The SYCC calendar for 2026 officially set sail on the first weekend of January, and what a way
to start.
Despite a very windy America’s Bay, Audine and Richard hosted sundowners aboard Dakota,
bravely moored and standing firm while the breeze did its best to add a little drama. The payoff?
A cracking evening surrounded by great people, great boats, and even better stories.
Joining the fun were Chris (Sea King), Chris and Julie (Majella Too), Derek (Rendezvous), and
Kim and Bernd (Taranaki). What followed were hours of relaxed chatter, sailing tales, and some
absolutely hilarious plumbing sagas. These were edge-of-your-seat moments, punctuated by
howls of laughter that could quite possibly have been heard echoing right across the bay.
This get-together marked the first SYCC catch-up event for 2026, and it set the tone perfectly:
friendly, informal, and full of the kind of camaraderie that makes sailing clubs special.
Looking ahead, Derek has kindly put his hand up as trip leader for our 7–8 February sail to
Castle Lagoon.
While the SYCC dates are set for 2026, we’re still looking for trip leaders for the remaining
events, and before you panic, leading an event is easy. There’s no paperwork, no whistles, no
clipboards. To lead an event, all you really have to do... is show up.
Your event can be anything you like:
● A BBQ at The Basin
● A casual catch-up at Towlers
● A sail to spot the whales
● A progressive dinner
● Morning tea, lunch, or drinks at a marina or club
● Or simply a relaxed chat over a pizza
SYCC events thrive because members step forward and bring people together. So have a think,
raise a hand, and help steer SYCC through another fantastic year of sailing, stories, and shared
sunsets.
